Besides the spectacular scenery of mountains and rice-field valleys, the area is home to around 8 different ethnic groups that still make and wear their beautiful traditional clothing, and has much to offer anyone who is interested in textiles. There are 53 ethnic minorities in Vietnam and each minority has its own textiles tradition and costume. There are crossovers but they still remain quite distinct as each tribe has its own symbolisms and patterns marking their identity. When you are up north the cloth is heavier because of the weather but as you go down south, silk becomes the fabric of choice. The most defining element of textiles in Vietnam is its surface decoration and fabric manipulation techniques such as pleating, i-kat. Also, color holds a key role. The surrounding natural environment is translated into vibrant fabric.

  • Day 1: Hanoi - Train to Sapa
    Day 1: Hanoi - Train to Sapa
    A private bus and guide will pick you up in the evening and transfer you to the overnight train to Lao Cai Province
  • Day 2: Sapa Hilltribe

    Arrive at Lao Cai in the early morning. Take an hour’s drive uphill to Sapa, giving guests a glimpse of some stunning scenery and impressive rice terraces. Settle into Sapa Town, have lunch, and view some intriguing works and collections of ancient designs from local weavers. Spend the afternoon learning baste fiber techniques, visiting indigo or hemp farms, and studying Batik and Tritik techniques or H'mong and Dzao textiles. In the evening, enjoy a traditional musical performance from the H'mong people. 
  • Day 3: Sapa- Lao Chai - Ta Van - Hanoi
    Day 3: Sapa- Lao Chai - Ta Van - Hanoi
    Rise with the sun for breakfast, trek from your hotel through pine forests and mountain valleys to Lao Chai village, home of the Black H'mong people, and Van village, home of the Dzay tribe. You will have the chance to attend a hands-on fabric workshop to learn about traditional weaving, and have private meetings with textile artists and craftspeople. Practice the processes, including age-old raw tree dye techniques. After lunch at a local restaurant, transfer back to Lao Cai Station for a night train to Hanoi. Arrive at Hanoi station in the early morning.
