There are 53 ethnic minorities in Vietnam and each minority has its own textiles tradition and costume. There are crossovers but they still remain quite distinct as each tribe has its own symbolisms and patterns marking their identity. When you are up north the cloth is heavier because of the weather but as you go down south, silk becomes the fabric of choice. The most defining element of textiles in Vietnam is its surface decoration and fabric manipulation techniques such as pleating, i-kat. Also, color holds a key role. The surrounding natural environment is translated into vibrant fabric.

  • Day 1: Hanoi - Hoa Binh - Mai Chau
    Day 1: Hanoi - Hoa Binh - Mai Chau
    Take a morning drive from Hanoi to the mountainous Hoa Binh province, home of the Muong and Thai minorities. We will visit Da Bac village to see how local people use wax-resist dyeing techniques to create unique colors and designs on fabric (Batik), and uniquely dye their hair with tea-tree leaves. In the afternoon, drive to Mai Chau and take a leisurely walk around a peaceful Thai ethnic village which is famous for its rich ethnic handicrafts. After dinner, enjoy a traditional Thai dance performance and join the locals for a sweet rice wine (Ruou Can) tasting.
  • Day 2: Mai Chau - Hanoi
    Day 2: Mai Chau - Hanoi
    After breakfast, start driving on the peaceful scenic roads to a Thai tribe village, where beautiful Thai girls work their looms with nimble hands. Customers will view some intriguing work and a collection of ancient woven designs, with opportunities for hands-on practice throughout. Have lunch in a local restaurant, then take a short walk to a H'mong village to see how the people use their traditional handicraft skills to earn additional income. Return to Hanoi in the evening.
